In the ancient land of Bharat, there lived a noble king named Sagara. He had many sons, but unfortunately, they could not produce any heirs to continue the royal lineage. In their last birth, these sons were cursed by a sage to become ash (remains) due to their arrogance and disrespect towards him. King Sagara performed numerous sacrifices and penances to break the curse, but his efforts were in vain. Finally, he decided to perform the horse sacrifice, which required a large amount of water. However, despite all his efforts, the sacrificial rituals could not be completed as there was no water available. It was then that Bhagiratha, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu, decided to bring the holy Ganges river down from heaven to earth. He engaged himself in severe penance and meditation for thousands of years to please Lord Brahma. Impressed by his devotion, Lord Brahma allowed the Ganges to flow from the heavens to the Earth. As the celestial river descended towards Earth, it encountered a formidable obstacle - the great serpent, Vritra. But with the help of Lord Shiva, who held back the water in his locks, the Ganges was able to reach Bhagiratha on earth. With the holy waters of the Ganges now available, King Sagara's ash and his ancestors were purified and found salvation. The descendants of Sagara became powerful and famous, with their kingdom expanding far and wide. Thus, through the tireless efforts of Bhagiratha, the world was blessed with the life-giving waters of the Ganges river.
