Savitri and Satyavan

Twaas she who arose with dawn each day - Savitri of great beauty, but also of wisdom. And her heart was set on mortal man named Satyavan.

His life was fleeting though his deeds were virtuous. In the land of the dead he would meet death's son whose touch always won the soul. Yet Savitri would not be denied. She who had love's true strength went to the realm of Yama.

There she pleaded for seven days and nights unending. Her arguments were so well formed, her logic so sound, that at last Yama conceded. "Let it be as you say," he declared, "since your words have moved me."

For Savitri had argued the nature of dharma - duty to one's own life and purpose. She spoke of how even death served this higher truth, by returning beings to their source. And Satyavan's deeds had been in line with dharma.

So Yama restored him life anew. But there was a price - Savitri must forget all she knew. Yet when the man returned home unchanged, his wife did not betray her knowledge. For love of him, she kept this wisdom hidden still.
